Speech Pathologist Near New Jersey
What is Speech Therapy?
Speech therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication problems for children and adults. It is performed by Speech-Language Pathologists, also known as SLPs or speech therapists. At Beyond Communication, we provide speech therapy services in New Jersey for children.
Speech Therapy is a specific kind of therapy targeted toward people with disorders that are formally defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) as a “communication difficulty” that prevents effective communication in their daily life. This type of therapy is used to improve communication which includes articulation therapy, language intervention activities, and other issues depending on the type of speech or disorder the person is suffering with.
Speech Pathologists are experts in communication therapy. They work with many types of communication and swallowing problems.
Who is it for?
Speech therapy is suitable for anyone with a speech disorder. We specialize in helping children with speech disorders. Many speech and language disorders are assessed during childhood, and forms of speech therapy can be beneficial in enhancing their communication skills in a social or academic setting. Most children receive treatment in childhood or adolescence.
Treatments are typically more effective if undergone at a younger age. Our New Jersey speech-language pathologists are trained to work with children under the age of 18.
Several speech and language disorders can be treated with speech therapy, including but not limited to:
- Articulation disorders: The inability to properly form certain word sounds.
- Fluency disorders: When the flow, speed, and rhythm of speech are affected. This can include stuttering, cluttering, and repeating.
- Resonance disorders: When a child has trouble understanding and processing what others say.
- Cognitive communication disorders: Difficulty communication because of an injury. This can include memory issues, problem-solving, and difficulty speaking.
What can you expect?
The techniques and exercises used for therapy typically only differ on the specific type of disorder and the person’s natural development. Speech therapy includes providing life-changing treatment and support care for children and adults.
For children, some forms of speech therapy can include playing games with the child – ones that specifically include promoting effective communication. Other forms of speech therapy you can expect are reading books, drawings, and other kinds of art that are used as a component of the speech and language intervention model, intending to promote and stimulate language development. The Speech-Language Pathologists will use age-appropriate tones and syllables that are effective in communicating with the child, taking into consideration their natural development process.
The team at Beyond Communication Practice also works with parents and carers who may be asked to participate in therapy sessions and carry out treatment activities at home.
How long does treatment take?
The length of treatment largely varies on a few factors, including:
- The child’s age
- The type of speech disorder they have
- The severity of the speech disorder
- The frequency of therapy
- Any underlying medical conditions
Some speech disorders that begin in childhood can begin to improve with age; other speech disorders continue into adulthood and therefore require long-term therapy to improve the disorder. It’s best to consult with a specialist to start treatment early before the child grows older with the disorder – which often will become more difficult to correct.
